Hockey & Roller Hockey Courts Questions

Only if it is flat, crack-free, and drains correctly. The builder checks the slab condition before specifying any surface. Cracks, slope issues, or rough spots affect skating quality and safety, so the slab may need repair or resurfacing before tiles are laid.

An uneven or cracked surface wears skate wheels faster, creates trip hazards, and makes puck movement unpredictable. The longer a damaged slab is used for skating, the more the surface deteriorates, which can increase the base prep cost when you do build.

Most outdoor courts use modular sport court tiles over a concrete slab. The tiles are rated for inline skate loads and have drainage gaps between panels. An acrylic color coating over bare concrete is an alternative, but tiles are more common for Phoenix conditions given UV and heat.

Not exactly. A roller hockey court is laid out for hockey play, with boundaries, face-off markings, and perimeter containment sized for the sport. A general skating surface may lack the layout, board containment, and surface flatness tolerance that hockey play requires.

The site assessment measures the site, checks slab flatness and drainage, and accounts for UV exposure and Phoenix heat in the tile spec. The property type also matters: a backyard court, school facility, and commercial complex each have different layout and material requirements.
